The
Hindu festival of Maha Shivratri is observed yearly on special day the God
Shiva married to the Goddess Parvati as per mythology. This Maha Shivratri is
called as Shivratri (Great Night of Lord Shiva) which celebrated as the God
Shiva and Shakti wedding. The legends reference that holy festival of Lord
Shiva with light on his greatness and the supreme power of Hindu religion
people. Shivaratri remembers the holy night when ‘Tandava’ dance was performed by
the God Shiva. The festival falls on the month ‘Maagha’ of Hindu calendar and
it coincides with February or March month Christian calendar.
From
the Maha Shivratri day the Shiva Pooja was initiated by the Hindu devotees. As
per faith, the creation of earth was completed by Lord Shiva. Also Maha
Shivratri day is related to wedding day of the Lord Shiva and his wife Shakti. There

Celebration
of Maha Shivratri
On
the festival of Shivratri, offering of Bael leaves to Lord Shiva at the temple
and one day fasting for the God Shiva. There is a ‘Jagaran’ at the night where
the devotees pray with ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ mantra of Shiva. The worship is to
get boons of Yoga and meditation for better life with good steadily. Early
morning the debotees go to the Shiva temples to worship the traditional
Shivalinga puja with family members. All the pilgrims have clean clothing for holy
bath with pots of water to bathe the Shiva. This is process of purification
which is compulsory for every Hindu festival.
The
Shiva temples are sound of Bells and chants of ‘Jai Shiva Shankerji’. The
worshipers circulate seven times around the Lingam and then pour water or milk
over it. Woodapple or Bel leaves are given to the Shiva for purification of the
soul of human. Then Vermilion paste is added to the Shiva Linga with fruits. Lighting
of the Diya or Lamp is done for marking satisfaction pleasures. All the family
members, relatives and friends celebrate with full of joy.
