Punjabi Wedding Rituals of Sikh Brides and Grooms

Punjabi people are native Indian origins speaks Punjabi language with Hindi as other way of communication. Punjabi Marriage

Wedding Day Rituals

Before the wedding, the bride is given red and white bangles to wear by her maternal uncle. This is called the Chuda ceremony. In Ghara Ghardoli, the bride and the groom bathe with the water brought from the Gurudwara. On the main wedding day, a flower veil is tied on the groom's forehead, after which he sits on the horse. These are called Sehrabandi & Ghodi Chadna rituals. On reaching the wedding venue, the bride and the groom exchange garlands. This is known as Varmala ceremony. After this, they are taken to the mandap, where the father of the bride performs Kanyadaan. This is followed by Mangalpheras in front of the sacred fire.

Milni (Introductions) - Sikh wedding 'Ardas' is performed by the prist in charge of Sikh scriptures and formal of introduce elder family members. Both eldest uncles of bride and groom exchange flowers garlands. Bride's family give good luck gift or 'Shagun' to groom's family.

Jaimala(Varmala) - Both the groom and bride in middling circle where family members are standing around them. They exchange flowers garland to accept each other and will love and live together. Muhurat or auspicious time is selection to perform the marriage ceremony.

Kanyadaan ritual - Bride's father gives Holi ring on groom's finger and gives his daughter's hand to him. Both take seven Pheras around sacred fire 'Agni'. Now groom applies vermilion 'Sindoor' to the bride's hair partition of head. Groom ties a Mangalsutra to his bride's neck. The newly married couple get blessing by touching the feet of elder members of family for happy married life.

Joota Chupai - Hiding the groom's shoes by his sisters-in-laws by stealing for fun tradition. The girls demand a amount of gift to return the shoes. The groom give gold jewellery to bride's sisters to take the shoes.

Rituals After Wedding

Doli Vidaai Ceremony - After marriage, the bride leaves for her parental house and throws back handful of puffed rice over head to mark the departure. Now the girl make goodbye to her parents and her family.

Welcome of Bride - After reaching the groom's house, the boy's mother performs the traditional Aarti at entrance door. The bride must step in with her right foot and kick the mustard oil which kept on the both sides of entrance door. She then offer puja with her husband in their room and touch the feet of the parents. The rest of the evening is spent playing traditional games. Marathi Marriage Ritual Ceremony in Maharashtra

The people with Marathi speaking as their mother tongue in Maharashtra state and region are known as Marathi people. Seemaan Puja - Seemaan Puja is done after the groom reaches the marriage venue with Barrat or wedding procession. Next the groom given gift and blessing after washing his feet by bride's parents.

Rituals on Wedding Day

On the wedding day starts with Lord Ganapati Puja. Maternal uncles of bride take her to the Lagna Mandap, where the 'Mangalashtakas' are recited. Both bride and the groom wear the Mundavalya on their heads with string of flowers.

Antarpat ritual - The bride and groom are supposed not to see each other on the wedding day. There is silk shawl placed to separate them.

Sankalp ritual - The holy verses are recited on the wedding place, both the bride and groom can see each for the first time. Here family members shower Akshata (unbroken rice) on the heads couple where they exchange garlands of flower.

Kanyadan ritual - Most important ritual when the father of bride gives his daughter's hand to the groom's hand. Next the groom ties a Mangalsutra on his bride's neck and applies Sindoor (vermilion) on her hair parting of forehead. Then bride applies Sandalwood Tikka on groom's forehead.

Satapadhi ritual - The both bride and groom makes seven rounds circle the sacred fire by remembering the seven holy vows of wedding. Then the bride has to touch her right foot to seven small heaps of rice.

Karmasampati ritual - The father of bride prays for God's blessings along with newly married couple. There is a grand lunch party for the guests after the wedding ceremony completed.

Rituals After Wedding

Grihapravesh (Entering Home) is next ritual after wedding where the newly married couple are welcomed by groom's mother. The bride is entering the house for first time. The mother cleans their feet with water and milk. Traditional Aarti is performed for bride to enter the house by kicks a Kalash of rice at door of home. Telugu Wedding - Vivaham Veduka Ceremony with Tradition

Janmashtami Festival of Lord Sri Krishna Birthday

Happy Maha Shivratri Festival for Marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati



The Hindu festival of Maha Shivratri is observed yearly on special day the God Shiva married to the Goddess Parvati as per mythology. This Maha Shivratri is called as Shivratri (Great Night of Lord Shiva) which celebrated as the God Shiva and Shakti wedding. Celebration of Maha Shivratri
On the festival of Shivratri, offering of Bael leaves to Lord Shiva at the temple and one day fasting for the God Shiva.
